The story behind the video: For the past 36 years, the Stephen Center has been lifting Omaha residents out of poverty by giving them the tools to stand on their own. By providing clients in the shelter with access to mental health resources and addiction therapy, Stephen Center rehouses 60-70% of their visitors on average. Saving Grace Perishable Food Rescue salvages food from local grocery stores that would otherwise go to waste and uses these donations to supply shelters. Through partnership, Stephen Center and Saving Grace provide access to nutritious meals in Stephen Center’s Emergency Homeless Shelter. With the aid of these two organizations, clients will often emerge from homelessness and return to the organizations as volunteer or staff members.

Meet Lori Swift, Stephen Center Donation Manager and former client. During Lori’s time at the Stephen Center, she started volunteering at the Center’s Thrift Store before graduating from the HERO program and eventually working her way up as an employee. In the video above, Lori explains how life-changing a donation of furniture and/or clothing can be to Stephen Center clients.
